Summer Plans

With most of the students, faculty, and TAs gone, its time to think about what I'll be doing this summer to keep myself entertained. So here are my ideas so far. Kind of like new year's resolutions, but for summer.

~ Work projects that I was too busy to finish while the students were here, mostly assessment stuff and looking further into the primary and secondary education in Qatar
~ Entertain the intern from the Pittsburgh campus that will be here for three weeks (and living with me)
~ Orientation 2007!
~ Actually learn Arabic - insha'allah
~ Study for the GREs (just bought some study books!)
~ Work out lots
~ Read lots
~ Vacation (insha'allah again! - I have the time, but need to find places that are far enough to be less than 100 degrees, but close enough to afford)

Hi, I live in Qatar as well, for about five months now. I live in the West bay area and am looking to volunteer somewhere or to start work somewhere. I am a well-traveled young American girl who has skills in communications.
I am looking for friends, work, tips anything to do lately. I am a bit bored, which I hate saying.

Primary and secondary education in Qatar is horrible! I bet they still flog students like I was flogged. I'm not surprised you EC stuff know nothing about this. You think qatar must be so progressive...I don't blame you. Afterall, all you expats live a very comfy life in Qatar so you don't know squat about the grim reality in local schools. Let me tell you something that I know for sure, it's not qatari peoples fault that these schools are like this. It's the hypocrites in High Positions(the ones who emloyed you) who benefit from keeping the majority of Qatari's ignorant. Heck, I could name you a few but then getting detained, jailed and deported as a result would be the least of my concerns!

  4. Hi Caryl, you don't know me, but I will be working for Georgetown's SFS-Q in about a month. I am really nervous about meeting people, esp since Mollie and Gregg will be leaving. Are you going to be in Qatar for the next year, I am guessing yes from reading your blog. I am just trying to find out as much as possible about Doha and Education City before I get there. If you have any insight or any advice about gearing up for my time in Qatar, I would LOVE it. My email is nalani.still@gmail.com. Can't wait for the weather and perhaps I will see you around the city!!

  7. Hi Caryl,

I found your blog while perusing Qatar related blogs. Shocking, right? I will be in Education City next month also working for CMU-Q in their summer college preview program (if my passport ever shows up..insha'allah). It's really cool to read a blog and see mention of Gloria and be like "I know her!". Anything special I should know about CMU-Q?
